I dreamed an old friend who has just given birth invited my family over to visit the new kid. She and her husband lived in a spacious apartment on the first floor of what seemed to be a block-long building in the City by the Sea that I frequent in dreams. The walls of their place seemed to be made of jade, with ornate carvings in them that almost seemed to move as you watched them: animals chasing one another, plants growing, people walking through a wood.

I had never met the husband, but dads often congregate together, and this fellow looked like the actor Robert Downey Jr. He was alternately cooking a large pot of what I assumed to be pasta sauce and trying to attend to the baby. My kids pranced around their apartment, chaos in their wake.

The new dad and I spoke of this and that, but apparently my wife and I were supposed to invite the balance of the party. There's more people coming? I wondered, and then remembered that yes, I had invited myriad random people off the street on the way here, but none had yet arrived.

The new dad began to speak of my brother, who was also supposed to attend. Apparently the woman my brother had once courted for nearly 11 years had taken up with one of the new dad's friends, namely the podcaster Joe Rogan. Rogan, the new dad advised, would also be in attendance, along with said girlfriend. The new dad warned that Rogan was insanely jealous in this regard, and if he caught my brother talking with his old flame, he might resort to jiu jitsu (remember, folks, this is a dream). The new dad then got on the floor and rolled around some, apparently demonstrating some jiu jitsu moves.

The doorbell rang. I walked through two huge double-doors and entered what seemed to be a rail station complete with turnstiles: the entrance to the apartment building. There were various screens on my side of the entryway showing the interior and the exterior of the building in glorious black and white. Beyond were at least 20 random people, folks I had invited, of all shape and color, smiling and waving bottles of drink. It felt like New Year's Eve, for some reason, and more people kept arriving, a bottleneck. No sign of my brother.

I pushed a button, and a light turned on, allowing the folks to file through. "Hello, weird new friends," I said.
