I dreamed I was out in a desert area of an unspecified village in the Middle East. It was night, a shrouded moon above. I was there with my son and an acquaintance who has a training company operating near New Egypt. He was there digging for a purported underground mass-grave of Jewish people from thousands of years ago (he is, I believe, himself Jewish). The digging was concentrated around a fountain on the town's edge, but we had stopped for the day as it was getting difficult to see.

Somehow my acquaintance had slipped out in the middle of the night and gone digging again for this underground sepulcher. When I discovered him missing I ran directly to the fountain, where I saw a jagged hole in the ground. I knew he had fallen in, and that there was no way of retrieving him from the vault, from which a chill wind blew. You could hear the sobbing moans of the dead crying up from the ground. I knelt down near the edge of the pit and wept for my friend, wept along with the restless dead below. Unbeknownst to me my son, all clad in black, had followed me there and was hiding in the shadows. He took me by the hand and lifted me up, and led me away.

I dreamed I was walking among low, squat brick homes, with narrow walkways between where no vehicles could pass. The homes were all consistently brown brick. I was alone except for a goose with a small, golden helmet and plume, which was itself followed by a duck flecked with gold. The goose seemed irritated by the duck's presence, and said in a craggy, crackling baritone: "Go away, duck. You're not wanted. Go away."

But the duck didn't leave, and we walked together down silent streets.
